The Art Exhibition of National Collections

Menyigi Masa

National collections art exhibition is one of the main exhibition programme that initiated and held by Galeri Nasional Indonesia, Direktorat Jenderal Kebudayaan, and Kementerian Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan. This exhibition showed state artwork collections of artistic produced by Indonesian artists which is managed and collected by institution all around Indonesia. This exhibition was held with purpose to publish the artwork of state collections and showed the wealth and treasure of the Indonesia especially through the artworks. Furthermore, also gave a chance to the public to be able to appreciate, well informed about state collections, and also get closer to the important figures in the development of Indonesia art history.

"Menyigi Masa Exhibition is a very early effort of examine - investigate, note, weed, and explained - the artworks which is collected in various state institution, which can be noted as state collections." Suwarno Wisetrotomo - Exhibition Curator

Furthermore, Suwarno affirmed, "The aspects of the role and the meaning by the artists also his artworks - in Indonesia context and Indonesianness - that's what I mean as the missing link. This exhibition tried to track, investigate, and weed the artifacts - which is tangible and intangible - so that it can be mark as a loose link, to then connect it."

When the first time came in to the exhibition room I saw this beautiful painting. “Firm Reef Rock” – the title of this painting really describe the appearance view that visitor will enjoy. When I saw the artwork, I felt go to another dimension into the painter soul. FYI, Hendrik Hermanus Joel Ngantung or known as Henk Ngantung was a painter and ever became Jakarta Governor on 1964-1965. Then I just knew, Patung Selamat Datang – Welcoming Statue in Jakarta was sketched by him too.

The Soul of Emerald was one of the most impressive installation I’ve ever saw in the exhibition. Eye-catching then looked as simplified artwork but still elegance and invaluable collection. Time by time for me, when generally colorful artwork can amazed and impressed me, but recently simplified and one tone color of artwork can be more impressive. According to the title collection, I felt shade of soul when was observing this collection. The “Soul” looked as if want to dance and fly away in the air.

Affandi – when someone mentioned “Indonesian great painter” Affandi and Basoeki Abdullah will be directly appeared in my mind. Similar with the artwork of Henk Ngantung, the Affandi artwork displayed actually general object of sunflower. Affandi artwork generally expressionism that the artist tendency to distortion the reality with emotional effect.

Yogyakarta Istimewa! or how special Yogyakarta! Yes, Yogyakarta special region always known as student city and culture city. Talk about Yogyakarta always related with Yogyakarta Palace with their soldier. Wirobrojo Soldier – Yogyakarta Palace Frontline Forces. Wirobrojo derived of Wiro means brave and Brojo means sharp. Their name represents their existence as frontline forces who brave and sharp while guarding the Yogyakarta Palace. Then next Mantrijero Soldier, literally Mantrijero means spokeperson who can play a role as decision maker in Yogyakarta Palace. The last, Prawirotomo Soldier – Prawiro / Prawira means soldier in Javanese language and Tomo / Utomo / Utama means main. So, Prawirotomo means main soldier in Yogyakarta Palace. All soldiers have their own important role in Yogyakarta Palace until nowadays. I hope someday I can watching their parade in live festival in Yogyakarta.

One of the exhibition staff told to me if the Goa Gala-Gala artwok is one of the masterpiece of this exhibition. The painter name is very identic with Bali culture which is that means related with the mythology stories too. One of the artwork material is calico textile that usually used as wheat flour packaging. For me beside the textile material is not commonly used as the paper for painter, this is my first time saw the artwork on the calico textile. How an unique artwork, right?

Generally with the label of national collection I thought many visitor will have a high expectation with the exhibition collections. This is a great exhibition but for me I still have a higher expectation for the exhibition. For example for Soul of Emerald installation there is no borderline on the artwork. I’m still waiting for the next national collection of the art exhibition. What do you think about this collection and the exhibition? Feel free to say something on the comment column.
