“Creativity is a joy forever, Art is love, Art is power.. Fear no power!” - Dolorosa Sinaga
“Entering family life and having a child, I found a new context for issues I work with. The social reality I face, become ‘more real’, offering deeper insight and a richer understanding, as well as a closer exposure to its intricacies.” - Budi Santoso
A
Conversation with God
When I tried to explain the
Israel-Palestine war to my 6-year-old daughter, she paused and stared seriously
at the sky. Half praying and half conversing with God, she protested: why does
a God who is full of love let war happen?
Historical
Moment
A mother who makes reading a
book for her kids before bed a ritual is building a foundation for education.
Books and other literacy practices introduce ideas and knowledge to children, serving
as a key to the window of the world and illuminating their life path.
Monument
of Semanggi Tragedy, 1998 – 1999
Following’s Suharto’s forced
resignation in 1998, student and mass protests erupted in the streets of
Indonesia to resist the return of the militaristic New Order regime. Soldiers
brutally crushed these protests, chasing protesters onto campuses. Some
students were killed. The monument in front of you, my friend, is a demand of
justice, urging the state to address the murder of those students who fought
against the repressive power of the government.
Forced
Disappearance
In the second half of the
1990’s, the military regime of the New Order, which had overthrown and silenced
our first president, Sukarno, in an army coup, kidnapped and tortured
pro-democracy activists. To this day, many of our children never returned. We
are left with only their portraits to hold.
Monument
of 1965 Genocide
The genocide members and
supposed sympathisers of the Indonesian Communist Party in 1965-66 has never
been resolved. This book is a monument to those who were silenced without trial
and brutally tortured. Through art, I call upon the state to address this
59-year-old case of human rights violations. Many survivors passed away, taking
their hope to their graves. The remaining survivors, though old and fragile,
continue their fight for justice for themselves and their families.

I, the Witness is Dolorosa’s
homage to and a continuous struggle for justice for Ita Martadinata
(1980-1998), one of the victims of mass rape against Chinese Indonesian women
during the May 1998 riots in Jakarta. On the 8 October 1998, Martadinata was brutally
murdered in her bedroom one week before her scheduled testimony in front of the
United Nations. Her murder case remains unresolved. Through Dolorosa’s hands,
Martadinata is immortalised in a tall slender figure, standing firmly before a
confession table. She is wearing a kebaya encim in an ethereal golden colour as
her open mouth and staring eyes would forever voice the oppressed.

This is not the first time I have enjoyed the artwork of Dolorosa Sinaga. However, this time Dolorosa Sinaga's artworks seem to show a different side of the artist. I can't say much about this exhibition because this exhibition is very deep and touching for me personally.
