Pantjoran Tea House
Dedicated for tea
lovers
A
Leaf of History
“We built our tea house in the heart of old town Batavia
(now Jakarta), the busiest trading port in Asia during the 17th – 18th century
and the symbol of enterprise that nurtures the fighting spirit of Indonesia
until today. In the capital of Indonesia that bustles with activity, we sought
to provide a place of refuge for a man of any background to rejuvenate the
soul.” – Pantjoran Tea House.
Today we will
have a great tea journey with the peaceful ambience around one of main tourism
destination in old town area. What will be pop up first in your top of mind
when we talk about tea? Twinings or TWG? Neither the British nor Singaporean
tea. There is no chamomile tea for today’s menu. Let’s try this Chinese
traditional tea.
This building
divided into two floors, the first floor there are tea ceremony table, tea shop
gallery, and cashier spot with traditional drug store’s ornament. Move forward
to the second floor there is more spacious dining room that could also either
use for tea ceremony or private event that will be separated by partition
ornament.
When we go up to
the second floor, we will see this portrait above the stair. Anyway, I’ve ever
saw this image in one of temporary exhibition held by Indonesian National
Gallery. Then somehow this portrait more likely invite you to the other place
far away from the real one.
We tried some
chef recommendation menu that are Black Pepper Beef, Sapo Seafood, Beet Root
Fried Rice, Hakao, and Refreshing Oolong. For me Black Pepper Beef here was the
most tender I’ve ever tried and Beet Root Fried Rice was really tasty moreover
there was no oil flavor left.
Beside the first
portrait above the stair, there are the others ornament that support calm
ambience that will make you want to stay longer here. There are several big
windows which is you can enjoy your dining while staring at the street. Accompanied
by hanging light bulb and red lantern side by side harmoniously with some
portraits and display of tea ceremonial set.
Glimpse into Chung
Hwa Pharmacy which founded in 1928 right at the entrance of Chinatown. Precisely
in December 2015 the former Chung Hwa Pharmacy building has been revitalized by
the Jakarta Old Town Revitalization Corporation (JOTRC) with architect Ahmad
Djuhara, this is to support the Old Jakarta area as the world cultural heritage
site by UNESCO. And make this building as a tea shop with the name Pantjoran
Tea House.
Gaiwan is
chinese lidded bowl without handle used for the infusion of tea leaves and the
consumption of tea. This Gaiwan has a fish pattern.
A teapot is a
vessel used for steeping tea leaves or herbal mix in boiling or near-boiling
water, and for serving the resulting infusion which is called tea. This teapot
is made of clay.

Patekoan Tradition
The free tea
presentation, known as the Patekoan tradition (eight teapots), began with
Kapitan Gan Djie and his wife who always put eight teapots for traveling
merchants and people who were tired and wanted to take shelter. This tradition
is again carried out by the tea house owner to pour back the spirit of
diversity and sharing solidarity.
What do you know about tea types? What tea have you tried?
Each type of tea has different efficacies. Pantjoran Tea House is ready to
provide knowledge and experience of drinking tea that will not be forgotten.
Definitely, I will try tea ceremonial for my next visit. Nevertheless,
I still didn’t have decision which one type of tea will be selected due to all

Black
Tea
Black tea is a type of tea that is more oxidized compared to
green tea, oolong, and white tea. In general, this tea has the strongest
flavor. In Chinese, black tea is a classification commonly used for post-fermented
tea, such as Phu Erl tea.
South Yunnan Province specialized in growing types of Phu Erl
tea. This tea is taken from a large, old tree. The leaves that fall around the
tree will become fertilizer for the tree itself. Because it is grown without
the help of chemicals, Phu Erl tea is called the best tea of all kinds.
Black tea’s benefit: Prevent diabetic, reduce cholesterol
level, and reduce the risk of stroke and blood pressure.
Oolong
Tea
Colored between green and black, Oolong tea is also known as
Dark Green Tea. Oolong tea is a semi-oxidizing tea, which is dried in the hot
sun and aerated to wither. Shredded during oxidation and then formed to stop
oxidation.
The name Oolong, which is read by Wu Long, means "Black
Dragon", which is derived from the legend of the discovery of a good and
docile black dragon on a tea tree that has never been cultivated. The farmer
who saw the black dragon became curious and then picked the tea and processed
it into Oolong tea.
Oolong tea’s benefit: Protect skin from the sun and
cigarettes, facilitate digestion, prevent tooth decay, and helps in losing
weight.
Green
Tea
Green tea is a type of tea that does not undergo an oxidation process. This tea has a high antioxidant content and is useful in preventing cancer. In addition, green tea is also beneficial for increasing metabolism and bone density. Moreover, the other benefit is to reduce brain damage after a stroke.
